Galileo Program is a European civil satellite navigation program jointly initiated by the European Commission and the European Space Agency to build independent civil global satellite navigation & positioning system for the Europe. Compared with existing global satellite navigation & positioning systems, the new system features better coverage, accuracy and reliability. With a total investment of Euro 3.5 billion, this system will involve 30 navigation satellites and related ground facilities, and is expected to be completed by 2008.
In October 2004, the Galileo Technical Cooperation Agreement was officially concluded between the Ministry of Science and Technology and European Commission in Beijing, making China the first non-EU member of Galileo Program. As a member of the Galileo Allied Executive Council, China will enjoy equal rights and assume same obligations with EU countries.
